About

Institut Pelangi Perempuan (IPP) is an organization focusing on the empowerment of young Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (LBT) women in Indonesia and creating safe spaces for them. Since its foundation, IPP has adopted the strategy called Education, Fun and Entertainment (Edufuntainment) and promotion of cool politics. The use of youth friendly language as well as recreational spaces such as dance and sport (badminton and boxing) club are used as the tools for mobilizing youth LBT women in Indonesia.

IPP has also created Lez School (composed of short courses on Gender, Sexuality, Feminism and LBGT rights which take place every weekend) for helping young LBT women in the process of their empowerment. Publishing CD Magazine called KLIK! is among IPP's efforts for creating safe tools for youth LBT women to access the information about sexuality rights, as most of IPP members feel insecure to access print media because LBT sexuality issue is taboo, so that they could access the CD magazine anytime they feel secure and comfortable to read it. The CD Magazine is produced in the format of music CD to hide the content of the magazine in order not to endanger them. Another reason for choosing CD as a communication tool is the fact that production cost is cheaper than the print magazine.

Activities

On October 29, 2010 the IPP launched the Yogyakarta Principles comic in Jakarta with art and cultural performances presented by Indonesian youth LGBT. Despite continuing threats of attacks and harassment by religious fundamentalist groups LGBT events, they decided to moving forward and promote the Yogyakarta Principles.

"Yogyakarta Principles is a set of international principles relating to sexual orientation and gender identity, intended to address documented evidence of abuse of rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people, and further ofintersexuality requested by Louise Arbour according to the International Human Rights Law. The outline of the Principles was drawn at a meeting of International Commission of Jurists and human rights experts from around the world at Gadjah Mada University on Java from 6 to 9 November in 2006. "It contains 29 Principles adopted unanimously by the experts, along with recommendations to governments, regional intergovernmental institutions, civil society, and the UN itself".

The comic book is intended to popularize The Yogyakarta Principles amongst young queer community in Indonesia in a more youth -friendly format and language. The story in this comic book is inspired by the real life story of a number of young queer women in Indonesia and with the hope that its intended audiences could easily relate with it and make it part of their advocacy for LGBTI rights in Indonesia.
