About

Solidaritas Perempuan (Women’s Solidarity) was established on December 10th, 1990 with the aim of advocating for gender equality through the promotion of pluralism, anti-violence, ecological awareness, and just principles.  In 1993, Solidaritas Perempuan was divided into 14 regional offices spread throughout Indonesia. The Aceh branch has launched a campaign to increase public awareness of the harm caused by the implementation of Shari’ah law, and to encourage policy change. Additionally, SP Aceh advocates the reform of local Shari’ah laws in order to address culturally justified violence.  Through lobbying and increasing the capacity of stakeholders, SP Aceh is fighting to increase awareness of some of the harmful aspects of the relationship between religious laws and the rights of women.

BAOBAB For Women's Human Rights is a women's human rights organization, which focuses on women's legal rights issues under the three (3) systems of law - customary, statutory and religious laws in Nigeria. The organization evolved from an ad hoc group of activists, social scientists, lawyers, and specialists in Muslim laws and Arabic who were responsible for executing the Women and Laws Nigeria project, under the auspices of the International Solidarity Network of Women Living Under Muslim Laws from 1993 to 1996. In 1996, BAOBAB as presently constituted formally came into being.  BAOBAB operates from a national office in Lagos and with outreach teams in 14 states across Nigeria and is considered one of the leading voices in Nigeria advocating against cruel and violent forms of punishments against women in the name of 'culture'.

Baidarie Sialkot is a Pakistani non-governmental organization that grew out of an initiative of women in the rural village of Roras in 1993. Stemming from the creation of project focused upon literacy and skills training in 1991, Baidarie is committed to the role of education and awareness in expanding the rights of women. Through capacity building projects, Baidarie has worked hard to help women become more active in the decision making processes.

GREFELS, or the Research Group on Women and Laws in Senegal, was founded in 1994. A feminist, non-political, non-religious and non-profit organization, the focus of GREFELS is to research women’s rights, advocate and support the expansion of human rights. It stemmed from the work of women engaged in Women Living Under Muslim Laws (WLUML), an international solidarity network. GREFELS works with local and national organizations to promote the rights for women. Through a multi-disciplinary approach, including research, training, and activism, GREFELS is committed to changing the behavior of institutions and rural communities in order to prevent violence against women.

Background 

The Islamic Republic of Iran is perpetrating state violence against women, often using religious pretexts to justify such violence affecting women regardless of their backgrounds . State violence against women takes place on the streets  committed by Basij (State-sanctioned religious police);  in courts  - when State violence take the form of legal codification that defies the very standards that Iran has committed itself to; and in jails – wen it become part of the method of extracting confessions in jail, with rape condoned as a means of torture.   Indeed anywhere in the regime.

Institut Pelangi Perempuan (IPP) is an organization focusing on the empowerment of young Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (LBT) women in Indonesia and creating safe spaces for them. Since its foundation, IPP has adopted the strategy called Education, Fun and Entertainment (Edufuntainment) and promotion of cool politics. The use of youth friendly language as well as recreational spaces such as dance and sport (badminton and boxing) club are used as the tools for mobilizing youth LBT women in Indonesia.
